The ALMA/ACON 2007 Australian Lesbian and Bisexual Women’s Health Education and Research Grants have been awarded. This year saw a record nine applications for the $10,000 grant.
The combined ALMA/AIDS Council of NSW lesbian/bisexual women's health grants began in 2004/5. They were modelled on the successful US Lesbian Health Fund, and established by ALMA Convenor Dr Ruth McNair.
They have led to funding of many projects in areas such as: safe sex websites for young SSA women, contributors to resilience in lesbian and bisexual women, and lesbians' experiences of midwifery care.
This year's applications ranged from a project to upskill rural nurses in dealing with non-heterosexual women, to a study examining the characteristics of long-term lesbian relationships.
We were delighted to attract applications of a high standard from a wide cross-section of the community. In 2007, the winners were: Dr Jane Edwards and Ms Truffy Maginnis: 'Mental health care for same sex attracted and bisexual women: what influences their access to and satisfaction with mental health services' Dr Adele Murdolo: 'Understanding sexuality: building the capacity of bilingual and bicultural workers from immigrant and refugee communities’ Dr Catriona Bradshaw and colleagues: 'Bacterial vaginosis among women who have sex with women' The Grants Committee extend their heartiest congratulations to all the winners, and also to all those who submitted an application. We would strongly encourage ALMA members to spread the word about the grants to their friends and colleagues and encourage them to apply next year. Contact
